The Roman Emperor Valentinian I reigned from 364-375. He was a terrible person in his private affairs (he kept two bears and fed them human flesh) and he absolutely detested the more cultivated class of the empire. Probably because they bullied him because of his family’s humble origins. Nevertheless, or maybe because of that, he was great for the poor folks. He invested heavily in schools and infrastructure. On today’s route I stumbled upon the remains of one of his roads ‘Via Valentiniana’ that went from Maastricht to Nijmegen and was the main Roman road in the Netherlands. Emperor Valentinian also allegedly visited Cuijk (then called Ceuclum).
